Average measures of income are calculated as the total proprietor income of an area divided by the estimated number of proprietors within the area. Percentages are calculated by dividing the estimated proprietor employment by the total employment in an area. Information used in this map layer is acquired from the US Bureau of Economic Analysis Regional Economic Accounts: Economic Profile (CA30).

The Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS) program is a federal-state cooperative effort in which monthly estimates of total employment and unemployment are prepared for over 7,500 areas. These estimates are key indicators of local economic conditions. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) of the U.S. Department of Labor is responsible for the concepts, definitions, technical procedures, validation, and publication of the estimates that state workforce agencies prepare under agreement with BLS.

This layer displays the mean distance traveled by commuters, based on the centroids of the census blocks in which the reside and work. The mean was calculated excluding those records where the distance traveled was over 125 miles one-way. Additional data layers are available which show the proportion of commuters with a short (< 5 miles), moderate (5 – 25 miles), long (25 – 75 miles), or very long (75 – 125 miles) commute.
