This indicator reports maternal mortality ratio (maternal deaths/100,000 live births) by state and race/ethnicity group in 2019. Data are retrieved from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), 2023. The data file is “United States Maternal Mortality Ratio Estimates by race and Hispanic ethnicity 1999-2019.”

Source Description
The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) is an independent population health research center at UW Medicine, part of the University of Washington, that provides rigorous and comparable measurement of the world’s most important health problems and evaluates the strategies used to address them. IHME makes this information freely available so that policymakers have the evidence they need to make informed decisions about how to allocate resources to best improve population health.
Methodology
This indicator displays trends in maternal mortality ratios (MMRs) – maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, by state for 5 mutually exclusive racial and ethnic groups: Hispanic and any race; non-Hispanic American Indian and Alaska Native; non-Hispanic Asian, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander; non-Hispanic Black; and non-Hispanic White females ages 10-54 for each year from 1999 through 2019. IHME used a bayesian extension of the generalized linear model network on the National Vital Statistics System data on deaths and live births in each state and racial/ethnic group between 1999 and 2019 to generate the data.
