Hepatitis A Incidence

This indicator reports the number of hepatitis A (HAV) cases occurring in the report area. Rates are presented per 100,000 population.

The number of cases is based on laboratory-confirmed diagnoses that occurred between January 1st and December 31st of the latest reporting year. These data are delivered to and analyzed by the CDC as part of the national notifiable disease surveillance system.

Source

Source Description

The National Center for HIV, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and Tuberculosis Prevention (NCHHSTP) is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). NCHHSTP conducts public health surveillance, prevention research, and programs addressing HIV, viral hepatitis, sexually transmitted infections, and tuberculosis. Data availability, reporting jurisdictions, geographic coverage, and suppression rules vary by indicator and reporting year. Please refer to CDC NCHHSTP and NCHHSTP AtlasPlus documentation for current source, surveillance, and geographic coverage information.

Methodology

Cases or diagnoses reported by CDC refer to confirmed events occurring during the applicable reporting period. Rates are presented per 100,000 population and are calculated by dividing the number of reported cases or diagnoses by the corresponding population denominator and multiplying by 100,000. Population denominators are based on U.S. Census Bureau population estimates using applicable race and ethnicity classifications.

For HIV indicators, rates are based on the population age 13 years and older. Where CDC reported valid 2024 HIV cases and rates but did not provide a county population denominator, the age 13+ denominator was supplemented using NCI/SEER single-year-age county population estimates after validation against CDC-reported denominators and published rates. Records with suppressed or unavailable HIV case counts retain missing population values.

NCHHSTP AtlasPlus applies indicator-specific suppression and data-availability rules. Suppressed or unavailable source values are retained as such. Geographic availability may vary by indicator and reporting year. Please refer to the NCHHSTP AtlasPlus FAQ or Technical Notes for additional information regarding surveillance methods, suppression rules, and geographic coverage.
