Methodology
Indicator data are acquired from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) State of the Cities Data System (SOCDS) Residential Building Permits Database. This database contains data on permits for residential construction issued by about 21,000 jurisdictions collected in the Census Bureau’s Building Permits Survey. Most of the permit-issuing jurisdictions are municipalities; the remainder are counties, townships, or unincorporated towns. The number of permits issued is reported by building size (number of housing units). Residential construction rates are calculated per 10,000 existing housing units. Figures for housing units are acquired from the US Census Bureau Population Estimates program. For more information, please visit the HUD SOCDS Building Permits Database web page.
