Methodology

The 2018 Opportunity Atlas estimates the percentage of individuals born in each census tract who were incarcerated at the time of the 2010 Census. Incarceration was defined as living in the following types of group quarters: federal detention center, federal prison, state prison, local jail, residential correctional facility, military jail, or juvenile correctional facility. Data are calculated for the total population, and for demographic groups by sex, race/ethnicity, and parents’ income.
